What is medical writing?
Why am I doing it?
Who are you?
Hi, I’m Jennifer Goldberg, MPH, CHES®, CPhT.
I received my Masters in Public Health (MPH) from Virginia Commonwealth University and wanted to use my degree to its maximum potential. After working in healthcare data analysis and research during my twenties, I realized that I wanted to help people more directly. With an understanding of research and data, I found myself explaining certain concepts over and over again to a variety of people (stakeholders, physicians, other data people, patients, students, adults, kids, everybody). I thought to myself that there has to be a way to help people understand health concepts better.
Because of this, I became a Certified Pharmacy Technician to be able to explain medications more effectively. I also received my certification as a health education specialist to ensure a national standard of competency, but also because I am a nerd and like to learn more about my passion.
I started volunteering within my community to address what the public health people call “social determinants of health”. Social determinants of health “are the economic and social conditions that influence individual and group differences in health status” AKA poverty, housing, environment, finances, social issues, etc. I started with a local nonprofits that teach adults how to read and helping low income households with home repairs. Through these experiences, I realized that just a simple conversation or a simple diagram can help clarify so many anxieties and worries about one’s health. How could I help them?
With all of the noise of our society today, I wanted to help clarify information and educate those who are confused about their health.
Long story short: I want to help answer the questions of “what did my doctor just say?” and “how am I supposed to take this medicine?”
I hope through my work, I can make someone’s health a little bit easier to understand.
